Top 10 Tips for a Great Podcast Intro in 2026

When I first wrote about podcast intros back in 2018, there were around 550,000 podcasts out there. Today, that number is in the millions. The competition is fierce, and the technology has evolved—we aren't just thinking about audio anymore, we're thinking about multi-platform video, too.

Whether you are just launching or you're ready to reinvent an existing show, your intro is your digital handshake. Listeners decide in seconds if they are going to stick around. Here are my top 10 tips for crafting an intro that hooks your audience and builds real human connection.

1. Hook Them in the First 15 Seconds

Until you gain serious traction, assume people have incredibly short attention spans. The "less is more" approach still applies. Give them a quick, punchy hook before you even roll the theme music. Tell them exactly why they need to listen to this specific episode right now.

2. Lead with Authentic Passion

Listeners only have your voice (and maybe your video feed) to go off of, which means they can hear your genuine intonation. If you aren't completely enamored with your topic, it will show. Authentic, real human connection is the ultimate currency right now. Let your enthusiasm shine through.

3. Invest in Professional Voiceover

You want to show your subscribers that you are a serious producer from day one. That means investing in a high-quality professional voiceover for your standard intro bumper. A crisp, professionally recorded intro immediately signals legitimacy and sets you apart from the amateur crowd.

4. Nail Your Sonic Branding

Never discount the power of a great jingle or intro track. Sonic recall is incredibly high. Think about how a single opening chord of a Beatles song, for example, instantly sets a mood—your podcast music should do the same. Pick a tune that listeners will have stuck in their heads long after the episode ends.

5. Optimize for Video from Day One

It's 2026, and video podcasts are the standard. When designing your intro, you need to think about how it looks on YouTube and social clips, not just how it sounds on Apple Podcasts. Keep the visual branding minimalist and clean, and use tools like CapCut, Adobe Premiere, or hire a video editor to ensure your intro translates perfectly to short-form video.

6. State Your Value Proposition

Don't just say what the podcast is about; tell the listener what's in it for them. Will they learn how to start a business? Will they get a good laugh? Make the ROI on their time crystal clear within the first minute.

7. Make the Host Intro About the Listener

Yes, you need to introduce yourself, but frame your expertise around how it helps your audience. Instead of just listing your resume, explain why your background makes you the perfect guide for the journey you're taking them on.

8. Include a Seamless Call to Action (CTA)

Don't wait until the very end of the podcast to ask for a subscribe or a review—a lot of people won't make it that far. Weave a quick, natural CTA into your intro. Keep it simple: ask them to hit subscribe or check out the show notes.

9. Keep the Format Consistent

While the "hook" will change every episode, the core intro sequence (your theme music, the professional voiceover bumper, and the tagline) should remain identical. Consistency builds familiarity, and familiarity builds trust.

10. Don't Be Afraid to Pivot

Finally, remember that it's never too late to start over or reinvent yourself. If your podcast evolves, your intro should too. Don't feel locked into an intro you recorded two years ago if it no longer serves your current mission. Embrace the pivot!
